"You have access to some of the best coaches and trainers in the area."

I’ve made a lot of questionable decisions in my life, but coming to CrossFit UP was not one of them.  I walked through the doors thinking I’d just do my best and not really go into detail about myself. I was 40 pounds overweight and had a disability I was ashamed of. The staff at CrossFit UP have taught me to work with my body instead of against it, and they have shown me that needing modifications is sometimes part of the process.  But the coolest and most unexpected thing about this place is that the coaches were genuinely interested in my limitations and were eager to figure out ways for me to get the most out of each WOD.  It’s this kind of attention and respect that keeps me coming back class after class.

Whether you’re just starting your fitness journey or you’re a seasoned athlete, CrossFit UP is a great place to work out. You have access to some of the best coaches and trainers in the area, and more importantly, you’ll feel comfortable becoming your best self.

One last thing, it also helps that there are events outside the gym that give you a chance to really fit in and feel like your part of something, almost like a family. Yeah, like family, all that’s missing is a drunk uncle passed out in the front lawn and a collect call from your brother asking to be bailed out of jail.  Wait…maybe that’s just my family.

Why CrossFit UP? Santa Cruz is the mecca for CrossFit.  One has the ability to choose from countless boxes spanning the county.  UP rains supreme due to the coaching staff, the members, and most importantly, their commitment to moving well.  If you're new to CrossFit, UP is the ideal place to start.  Their Fundamentals Series ensures that new athletes learn the proper skill and technique before they go whole hog into a WOD.   Safety first, performance second.

UP's coaching staff takes time to get to know each athlete, their skill level, their motivators and their personality.  This effort allows the coaches to truly customize their communication style to get the most out of each member at every workout.  From the newest member to a seasoned pro, every UP athlete is given the attention they need to maximize their results at each WOD.

The Community...Smiles, hugs and fist pumping for sure.  UP members are more than just sweaty bodies packed into a box, they're friends and members of a tight knit community.  Sure, fitness brought us together but personal interests such as music, surfing, healthy eating, and travel has made us friends.  Beach WODs, birthday parties, Bar Brawls and more.  This is a place where people want to be.

I wouldn’t consider myself a die-hard “CrossFitter”, but since I started back in Jan 2015, the CrossFit discipline has definitely shown its results as an effective way to improve my surfing and snowboarding.  My performance level has increased, while fatigue has taken a lot longer to set in.  I also have to mention that CrossFit UP's coaches attention to detail and workout tips have played an integral part of my increasing improvement.  I'm extremely happy to be a part of the CrossFit UP community and look forward to another year.

Joining CrossFit UP was by far the best decision I made for myself in 2015!

When initially looking into joining a CrossFit gym, I was attracted to CrossFit UP because of their connection to DeWitt Physical Therapy. Their Fundamentals classes were great, Ryan and Eddie took the time to show us how to properly move through each moment, focusing on technique and how to safely work though each lift. They also helped modify moments and showed me alternative motions to protect my shoulder from an old injury. CrossFit UP’s Fundamentals were a great introduction to the CrossFit world and made the idea of going to my first class way less intimidating.

It was just after my first class I knew I was hooked! It was hard and I was doing a fraction of the weights and moments the others were but I was having tons of fun! The other members were welcoming and eager to help. I remember being absolutely exhausted but leaving the gym thinking this was awesome and I couldn't wait to come back again tomorrow! Now, a year later, I still have the same feeling, I love CrossFit UP and can’t wait to see what’s happening in the gym tomorrow.

The coaches have helped me from my beginning struggles to coaching me through new personal bests. It is impossible to put into words just how much I have changed in this past year. I am lifting more weight that I ever thought possible. I have taken 2+ minutes per mile off my race pace (Santa Cruz Half Marathon) and 4+ minute off my fastest mile time! Movements that I once thought were impossible now come with ease. I no longer suffer from chronic migraine headaches. I surf better, I swim faster, I play tennis better, I physically feel better than I have since… well since ever!

Not only have I seen amazing gains in my physical fitness, I have also become part of an amazing community. Ryan and Sonja have a true dedication to betterment, their passion is reflected in the amazing coaches who pass it onto every member as they walk into the gym. They continually stride to foster an environment for personal progress and growth. This feeling is contagious, CrossFit UP is a community that celebrates everyone's achievements as if it was their own, both in and out of the gym. I have gained a lifelong appreciation for physical fitness and lifelong friendships with genuinely amazing people.

Before I started working out at CrossFit UP, I had a sense of complacency. It was especially present when paddling out to surf wasn't an option but I still wanted to stay active.  I found CrossFit UP through my wife Cynthia, who was one of the first members and who was seeing positive results. She encouraged me to check it out for months and after a week-long flat spell, I finally cracked and went to a Surf Community WOD. Halfway through the workout, I was blown away by how out of shape I was. I couldn’t even finish and tapped out. I was a little let down due to my unsatisfactory performance but hey, you have to start somewhere. I signed up for the 6-class Fundamental introduction Ryan and his team designed focusing on CrossFit movements, strengthening, and mobility. Not ever being a gym/ jock type, I was really comfortable working with Ryan and his team. There is real value in the influence of physical therapy at CrossFit UP. They are diligent about implementing solid warm-ups and focusing on proper form to prevent injury. I have had a great time with the workouts and the people that make up the CrossFit UP Community.

Since I started 2 years ago, I have challenged myself to commit to a three class per week program. It has really helped my well-being, balance, flexibility, and strength. I feel like my surfing game improved, too, but that could just be in my head! :)

"I feel like I did 10 years ago!!"

I have had a few injuries over the years (been bounced from horses and things like that) and somewhere along I had to start compensating for my right hip by developing an odd protective gait. It wasn't so obvious that I thought anyone noticed but it made me feel old to walk like that! I found myself walking more slowly and being more careful of stepping over things and doing stairs and things like that. Because I have always been very active in riding, biking, backpacking, skiing etc, having to start protecting myself so much took some fun out of my activities. Well, a month into starting at CrossFit UP, I was walking across the dispatch floor one night when I suddenly realized I was walking normally! I am standing easily on one leg as needed as my balance is greatly improved and I am walking with a spring in my step again.  I feel like I did 10 years ago!I I never expected any of this, I was simply trying to arrest the downward spiral my body was going in - I never expected to reverse it!
